Committees: Joint Crisis

The Second Cod War

Iceland

It is 1972 in Iceland! The Cod War is seemingly ten years in the past and culminated in the final settlement between Iceland and Britain, creating a fragile peace and a solution for seasonal maritime rights in the area. But now ten years later, it is clear fish stocks are depleted in spite of the agreement and the fight for Cod is not over. Delegates will jump into this crisis and work swiftly and effectively for Icelandic prosperity. To overcome this economic crisis delegates will have to manage their natural resources, negotiate with world powers, and leverage global institutions for the good of Iceland. While the background of this conflict is "war" and military will be a part of committee, Delegates will have to use finesse in economic, political, and environmental policy to maintain the fragile balance in the region and in the world at large.

United Kingdom

It is 1972 in The British Isles! Nearly ten years ago, Iceland and Britain engaged in the first "Cod War", resulting in a fragile peace and solution for seasonal maritime rights in the area. But now, the Icelandic government has once again started pushing for an expansion of their maritime rights, blocking British fishing trawlers from harvesting the bountiful oceans around Britain. Delegates will leap aboard onto this crisis and work swiftly and effectively to not only defend Britain's seas but also her dignity. To overcome this economic crisis, delegates will have to balance international repercussions, consider domestic policy, and fend off the spectre of the Cold War for Britannia's honor. While the background of this conflict is "war" and the military will be a part of committee, Delegates will have to carefully consider the economic, political, and environmental impacts of their decisions as the seek to maintain the fragile balance in the region and in the world at large.

Cold War

USA

With Gerald Ford assuming office post-Watergate, the United States was pivotal in the Cold War. The task of selecting a vice president complicates an already fragile geopolitical landscape, while Ford’s administration grapples with the aftermath of Nixon’s legacy with concerns about nuclear proliferation. In the USSR’s exploitation of the Watergate scandal, the delicate detente with the USA is in a pickle, forcing delegates to decide between maintaining tension reduction efforts or seizing an opportunity for supremacy. Simultaneously, as Sino-American relations evolve and the PRC gains international legitimacy, domestic challenges, and rising tensions with the Soviet Union call for a balance for the United States. All in all, the United States needs to choose its priorities and fast.

USSR

Since the late 1960s, evidence of a détente with the USA has gradually emerged. The recent American Watergate scandal, however, has led to an increase in political scandal depictions and degradation of capitalism in the USSR. With President Nixon out of office, delegates must consider the next move. Should the USSR maintain and continue previous efforts to reduce tensions with the USA and CCP? Or is this an opportunity to gain political, economical and military supremacy over its rivals?

China

After spending decades ostracized by much of the world, the People’s Republic of China and its ruling Chinese Communist Party have cause for optimism. With U.S.-China relations established and United Nations membership achieved, the PRC’s future appears bright. However, its troubles are far from over. Domestic upheaval following the Cultural Revolution, rising Sino-Soviet tensions, and looming border disputes all pose unique challenges for this young nation. Delegates must come together to address these myriad issues, and do all they can to ensure a strong and successful China.
